Applications are open for Toronto homeowners looking to install home energy improvements to receive a low-interest loan from the City of Toronto through the Home Energy Loan Program.
Aecon Green Energy Solutions is committed to helping homeowners reach a cleaner, more cost-effective future. To do so, we leverage Aecon’s expertise and resources as a North American multi-discipline utility contractor. From being entrusted with engineering and constructing the largest grid-scale battery storage project currently underway in Canada (Oneida Energy Storage project) to delivering battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the home, Aecon is at the forefront of building the infrastructure needed to support today’s energy transition efforts.
As certified installers for various industry partners, we deliver the latest technology, high-quality installation, and reliable service. By installing a battery energy storage system in your home, you’ll enjoy the benefits of reliable backup power without the noise, fuel, or maintenance required by a generator.
Protect your home from the frustrating uncertainty of power outages by reducing your reliance on the traditional power grid.
Save on your electricity bills by harnessing energy during low-demand periods with cheaper rates and drawing on this stored energy when prices are high.
Reduce your fossil fuel consumption and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions by maximizing the capacity of renewable energy sources like solar.
If you have solar panels or are considering solar energy, pairing your solar power generation with a battery energy storage system enables you to maximize this renewable power source by storing surplus energy you aren’t using when production is high.
Learn moreWhen not connected to solar, battery storage systems pull energy from the traditional power grid during off-peak hours when electricity costs are low and store it to offset energy consumption at peak hours when costs are high. Some technologies even allow homeowners to log the prices from their local provider to create custom settings that maximize cost savings.
Learn moreA battery storage system acts as a buffer between the traditional power grid and your home. Whether it draws energy from a solar system or the grid, your battery system stores DC electricity in lithium-ion batteries, such as the Tesla Powerwall, SolarEdge, or Volthium technologies for later use.
Learn moreIf your system is connected to solar power, battery energy storage can prolong your use of renewable solar energy throughout the evening by powering your home with electricity captured during the day. We deliver integrated battery storage and solar energy systems as a streamlined service for our customers.
Learn moreEnjoy the peace of mind that your battery backup will automatically detect and start supplying energy in the event of an outage. Your battery energy storage system will disconnect from your main electrical panel to create a self-sustaining, personal grid that converts stored energy to AC electricity to power your home for up to 48 hours.

For residential battery storage, you can choose from the following types of battery technology: lithium-ion, lead-acid, and saltwater. Lithium-ion batteries are chosen for most battery storage at home because they are slim and last longer than other technologies.
When considering the output of a battery energy storage system, always review the capacity and power rating. The capacity indicates the storage potential of the battery, and the power rating determines the battery’s output. Our trusted installers can assist in deciding which type of battery is suitable for your home.
There are many different sizes of batteries. For most home applications, batteries will be small enough to be installed in your garage or basement, similar to the size of a mini fridge but slightly taller and far slimmer. Home batteries range from 40-60″ tall, 24-30″ wide, and 5-7″ deep.
During a power outage, your home battery will work to keep most devices and essential equipment running without interruption. Backup power is one of the most significant benefits of choosing a battery energy storage system – you can continue running your home without interruption! If you have solar panels, the energy generated from your system can help recharge your battery.
Although a battery energy storage system provides greater independence in electricity production for your home, most homeowners remain connected to the grid to continue having additional options for their home electricity supply. If you don’t have access to your own renewable energy source, such as solar or wind, your battery will draw power from the electrical grid during off-peak periods.
Batteries and associated equipment are most commonly installed in the garage. Sometimes, they are installed in the basement. Given these small footprint areas, the system will be placed on the wall or floor.
Battery energy storage systems typically do not require specific maintenance. The most important thing for longevity is to ensure batteries are installed in a dry location. It is best to wipe equipment down every month to remove any dust.
Warranties vary depending on the equipment provider, however, the most common warranty length on the equipment we install is ten years. We also provide a one-year workmanship warranty.
The cost of installing an in-home battery energy storage system, including all equipment, labour, and permit and utility fees, varies significantly depending on your home energy needs and the complexity of your system – typically within a range of $15,000 and $40,000.
Your battery energy storage system will include one or more batteries, an energy inverter, and hardware for managing and monitoring the system. As per typical electrical safety standards, it will also require a disconnect device (100A or 200A) downstream from your utility intake and another outdoor disconnect device (60A) downstream from your battery management hardware.
A battery storage system usually comes with equipment for monitoring and managing your system, including some functions you can control remotely from an app on your mobile device. This hardware – or smart panel – allows you to set your batteries to charge in “Peak-Shaving” mode, automatically reducing electricity consumption during peak demand periods. The system will store excess energy during off-peak hours and use this stored energy to power your home during peak hours, thereby reducing your electricity bills. Combining battery storage with a solar energy system can lead to even more savings on your electricity bills.
Battery storage helps homeowners optimize renewable energy sources like solar by storing surplus energy during high production and using this source to power their home during a grid outage or periods of low production (for example, during inclement weather or at night). Battery storage enables you to increase the percentage of low- and zero-carbon sources in your energy mix, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
